help with --emake-subbuild-db
does anyone know if you have to always set --emake-subbuild-db, or can you use it only when using subbuilds?

You do not have to always set it.
Setting the --emake-subbuild-db option has the effect of turning the subbuilds logic on. If you want to run an unassisted build, just leave that option out of the command-line.
